This week we're pleased to welcome Emily Birkett to our Deco Publique team! Emily joins us as an Intern until October and will be using her creative skills across all of our projects and festivals. Emily is about to graduate from Lancaster University after studying for a degree in Fine Art where she has been shaping her practice, using textiles to push the boundaries between what is considered art and craft.

Intrigued by the core social aspects and community value of knitting, Emily explored issues of sustainability for her final degree show, deconstructing clothing and other materials to create yarns. Using the fabric that would have been discarded Emily created an immersive experience with the knitted fabrics, preventing the contribution of unwanted items from going to landfill.

There's nothing like getting stuck in so Emily joined us in Liverpool at the weekend for Fine Tuned and her first experience of site build, the role of artistic liaison and long hot festival days! With two more festivals and a summer of activity it's a great time to join the team to see what its like to work in a small but busy arts and festivals company :)

Thanks to Lancaster University for supporting this placement.

Emily learnt about our work when she attended an enterprise lecture that introduced arts students to concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship in the arts, delivered by Deco Publique at Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts where we talked about our work in the cultural industries. For her final degree show she created this beautiful knitted installation that uses waste destined for landfill to question the differences between art and craft. She also creates brilliant opportunities for people to knit together.

Emily will be sharing her experience of being part of the team with a monthly journal so check in with us on @DecoPublique across Facebook / Twitter / Instagram where we'll share her posts.
