Folded Zine
—
Folded is an online zine and collective with the aim of spotlighting the vibrant arts scene of young creatives in Cumbria.
When Covid-19 halted the first iteration of The FOLD, co-designers Hannah and Marisa became co-producers of this new platform, ‘Folded’, supported by Deco Publique.
The zine was founded out of a desire to create a collaborative and creative collective between young people in the South Lakes, and to show the work of young writers, artists, actors, musicians, makers and thinkers alike.
Folded releases online issues quarterly, via their website. All contributors are paid and each issue features content ranging from articles and interviews, to visual art and computer games.
Hannah and Marisa have been mentored and supported by Deco Publique to take more ownership of the zine with each issue that is released. You can view the zine here.

Folded was born out of The FOLD and the subsequent Covid-19 Lockdowns when Deco Publique came together virtually with partners and co-designers Hannah and Marisa to discuss the prospect of an online zine, building on the desire for a network of young creatives discussed during the co-design sessions at the beginning of 2020.
“A zine is a great way to make getting your work out there more accessible for young people. There are so many people working in new and interesting ways, and in all sorts of media, who have never had the chance to display their work before”
- Marisa,24
“I wanted to start a zine because I think it is an effective way of connecting people who create art in different mediums. The benefit of this zine being online means we can show audio and video content as well as editorial & art. It's a fantastic chance to get people in the area talking.”
- Hannah, 23
The core team of Folded consists of Co-producers Hannah and Marisa, Staff Writer Chim Chirwa, and Resident Illustrator Bethan Thorsby. The content for each issue is produced by, on average, 15 creatives, who apply through the open call for young, Cumbria-based contributors occurring every three months.
“Last year I would never have imagined I would be sharing my writing for people to read. God forbid anyone saw my art. This zine would never have happened without the pandemic forcing us in The Fold to take risks.”
- Ella Luo, Folded Contributor and Co-design participant.
The FOLD was a programme of cultural activities focused in three locations in the Lake District and North Yorkshire - rural locales each selected for their distinctive identities and communities. Led by young people through a series of co-design sessions in Bentham, Kendal and Settle, the purpose of The FOLD was to produce a relevant cultural programme that engaged and supported young people to become creatively empowered in their own spaces.
