In 2018 Great Place Lakes and Dales commissioned Deco Publique to produce a programme in the Lakes and Dales as part of the Great Place project funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England. Due to the lack of public transport in the areas, we’re developing a programme of events that will move around three locations - bringing exciting cultural opportunities to young people in their hometowns.
THE FOLD is a programme of cultural activities taking place in three locations in the Lake District and North Yorkshire in Spring 2020. For three consecutive weeks a curated programme - from Music and Making to Design and Debating will emerge in Kendal, Settle and Bentham - rural locales with distinctive identities and communities. THE FOLD will be a new, relevant cultural programme that engages and supports young people to become creatively empowered in their own spaces.

The chosen locations are Kendal, Settle, and Bentham, rural towns which all have an appetite for arts and a big sense of community. Each location will be host to a pop-up/transformed space where young people can attend drop in and bookable art workshops, live music sessions, performances, talks and other stimulating projects that will occur for three weeks in one location, before moving onto the other two locations in the two consecutive months.
With the vision of empowering young people to create their own social, creative and educational space, The FOLD will bring people together, educate, mentor, encourage and finance ambitions, leaving a legacy of emboldened and informed young people. The programmes will be location specific and be co-curated with the young people that live there, allowing for a more impactful and meaningful project. A series of co-design workshops will take place with PhD candidate Laura Wareing from Lancaster University with the aim of drawing young people into a creative process that enables them to voice their views on challenges they face living in these locations and how they feel about their future there. Deco Publique previously worked with Laura on a co-design initiative, ReDesign by the Sea.
